Federer most popular athlete on Facebook

Not content with just being No. 1 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings, Swiss superstar Roger Federer is also the No. 1 most popular athlete on Facebook.

Federer’s official page on the social-networking site had 2,691,654 fans at last count, while his closest rival – American swimming sensation, Michael Phelps – had 2,687,346 followers.

The 28-year-old Federer regularly posts on his Wall and used the site to break the news of the birth of his and wife, Mirka’s twin girls, Myla Rose and Charlene Riva before also opting to share the first photo with his fans.

The Swiss even took time out from his record-breaking run at Wimbledon to answer fans’ questions on the social-networking site.

Sorry for the late update,

Unfortunately Federer is out of Montreal. He lost to Tsonga in the QF: 7-6 1-6 7-6. I did not see the match but it looked like it was going to be a fairly easy match for Federer. Even though he lost the opening set in a tiebreak, he was cruising through the second and the third. He won the second with 6-1 and was up 5-1* in the third. But he appearantly lost it at that point. His game went crazy and Tsonga's recovered. He got broken twice and barely managed to hold at 6-5* Tsonga. He fought of 3 MP's in that game and escaped into the tiebreak.

In that tiebreak Federer made a few to many erros and Tsonga produced some blistering forehands. He ended the match with a double fault.

A rare loss for Federer (the way he lost) and it ended his 21 winning match streak.

Federer will now play at Cincinatti next week. The draw has already taken place and can be viewed HERE.

Highlights

12-08-2009 09.20

Federer has already gained points this tournament. After losing to Gilles Simon last year in his first match he now defeated Canadian Niemeyer 7-6(3) 6-4.

Federer was still a bit rusty as he offourse has not played for the last 5 weeks and has probably trained a bit less then normal. Despite that Federer came out being very agressive as we know him. In the beginning of the match Niemeyer had difficulties finding his first serve, but Federer was not able to take advantage of it. A bit later on in the middle of the first set Niemeyer found his first serve and was very consistent with it. Federer did not find a break of serve. Federer only had to fight off a break point in the beginning of the match. The first set went into a tiebreak with some great points by Federer. He took the tiebreak with 7 points to 3.

In the second set Niemeyer continued to serve good. But as the match progressed he became a bit fatigued and his serve started to break down a bit. At 3-3 Federer took advantage of this and broke the Canadian. At 5-3* Federer had a couple of breakpoints / match points but was unable to convert. He then served it out on his own serve. In the last few games Federer again made some great shots!

All in all it was a bit rusty with Federer making more errors then normal but the 'W' was never in doubt.

Federer will now play thursday against either his countrymen Wawrinka or Gobulev.
