16-09-2009 15.15 USOpen tennis update: Federer loses US Open Final to Del Potro Unfortunately Federer has lost the final of this years US Open. In a exciting 5 set match, Del Potro beat Federer: 3-6 7-6(5) 4-6 7-6(5) 6-2 Del Potro is the first player besides Nadal to defeat Federer in a Grand Slam final. In the first set thing were looking great for Federer. He immediately broke the Argentine (with an absolute stunning point by the way) to take a 3-0* lead. An advantage that Federer would not give away. Both players held serve so Federer had to serve out the set at *5-3. He did so succesfully and the first set was his. The turning point, I believe, came in the second. Federer again immediately broke the Argentine to take a *1-0 lead. I believe Del Potro later on also had a breakpoint to break Federer back but did not manage to do so. On the other hand Federer had multiple breakpoints to go up a second break which would virtually secure the set. He did not break which would come back to him. At *5-4 and serving for the set, Federer went up 30-0 but then made some bad decisions and sloppy points to let Del Potro get back in the set. Up until this point Federer was clearly the better player and not letting Del Potro getting in to any kind of mood, or letting him believe he could win it. But after the rebreak Federer gave him faith. He started to play better and Federer looked a bit vulnerable. He easily held to go up 6-5 and was gauranteed of at least a tiebreak. Federer also held his service game and the tiebreak was to decide the second set. Del Potro ultimately took this set and was right back in this match. If Federer had taken the second set, the match would have most likely been over. Federer I believe has never lost in a Grand Slam match when being up to sets to love, and by just serving out the second set Del Potro would have never believed he got a chance to win this thing. But unfortunately things did not go that way. Federer looked a bit rattled and Del Potro broke Federer mid 3rd set. Del Potro was looking strong on his service games and making it difficult for Federer on his. But being as great as he is, Federer broke right back and held after that. At 5-4* Del Potro had to serve to stay in the set. He helped Federer to win the set by making 2 double faults in this game. Including one at setpoints. Federer again had the lead.
In the fourth Federer again
got numerous of breakpoints in Del Potro's first servicegames of
the set. But again not making them. Later on Del Potro made his
move on his first breakpoint of the set. Again Federer was down
a break. He managed to finally convert a breakpoint later on to
tie things up. The 5th set was to decide this final. Unfortunately Del Potro was the stronger one in this set. He broke Federer straight away and never looked back. At 5-2* Federer serving Del Potro broke Federer again and converted on his 3rd matchpoint. Juan Martin Del Potro is the new US Open champion.
The thing that cost Federer this match is probably his serve, he served very, very poor this match. Making an uncharacteristic 11 double faults and hardly finding his first serve. Also on the important points Federer could not make a first serve. The second thing that Federer did not do well this match was the breakpoint conversion. He made only 5 breaks out of 22 opportunities. But yes, Federer had some tough moments, but you have got to recognize the great performance Del Potro showed. He started a bit slow but time and time again fought his way back in to this match with some great and powerful tennis. It was only his first Grand Slam final and he won it against the Greatest Of All Time. Del Potro is also a great guy who I respect very much. If Federer could not win it, I am glad Del Potro did. It's sad Federer did not win, but we should not be sad. Federer had a great year (so far, it's not over yet of course!) and won the French and Wimbledon and was again in the finals of the other 2 Grand Slams. He also broke the all time record of Grand Slam victories. Beside that he has gotten married and hade twin girls. How can we not be happy this year even after a dissapointing result like this. So let's cheer Federer on for the rest of the season and support him when we can! Federer's next scheduled event is the Davis Cup against Italy. He has not yet withdrawn from this so at this point I am expecting him to play. Davis Cup starts Friday the 18th of september.

13.35 Small update: I would like to congratulate Kim Clijsters for winning the US Open on the womens side. It is good to have here back!
USOpen tennis update: Federer through to final after beating Novak Djokovic Federer has beaten Novak Djokovic to reach the final of the US Open. It is his 7th final in a row and he made 17 of the last 18 grand slam finals. Federer beat Djokovic: 7-6(3) 7-5 7-5. A match that will probably be only rememberd for one shot. The between the legs shot from Federer. I can say all I want about this great shot, but the best thing to do is just to look at it. Here is the shot + matchpoint + short on-court interview:
Just incredible.. The rest of the match almost doesn't een matter now. But I'll sum it up for you. In the first set Federer went down a break after not making the breakpoints himself. At 3-2* Djokovic broke Federer to take the lead. But a break is only a break if you keep your next service game. Djokovic did not. Federer broke straight back to love and thing were even again. Both players held their serve until the tiebreak was needed to decide the winner of the first set. Federer comfortably took that tiebreak with 7 points to 3. Not bothered by the loss of the set Djokovic continued to win his servicegames. Federer was not having his best 'return of serve day'. Both players had some tough games in this set but both still managed to hold. But at the end of the set, as Federer usually does, Federer broke Djokovic. And with this break he had immediately won the second set, 7-5. The 3rd set was a bit of a copy to the second. Both players had some easy games, and both players had some tough ones. Federer had to fight of some breakpoints near the end of the set but he managed to do so. And again at 6-5* Federer took control. At 0-30 he made the points as you can see on the youtube video above. And sealed the match. So ANOTHER grand slam final for Federer. He has made all 4 grand slam finals this year. He did the same in 2006 and 2007. He is the only player to have done that three times. A already perfect year can become even more glorius if he could win it. But it won't be an easy match. Federer will play Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro in the final this year. Del Potro absolutely destroyed Nadal in their semi final winning it 6-2 6-2 6-2. Federer's last meeting with Del Potro was at the French where the Argentine went down in a tight 5-setter. The final will be played at 16.00 local time. Good luck! All pictures from today: PAGE 3

14.20 USOpen tennis update: Federer through to 22nd semi-finale in a row after beating Soderling Federer is through after beating Soderling for the 3rd time in a row at a Grand Slam and for the 12th time in a row overall. He beat the Swede 6-0 6-3 6-7(6) 7-6(6). The first set from Federer was absolutely brilliant. He played the best tennis he's ever played and was all out on the attack. When the match is online I recommend getting it to watch this first set. It was amazing. Soderling did not know what hit him and went down 6-0. In the second set Federer was still playing some great tennis. Again Soderling just could not stop him. Even though he managed to save a few BP's in this set, he was still broken and Federer eased to 6-3. The third set went a little bit different. Federer was still good, but Soderling went more for his shot this set. He also served better. In the first game Federer did have 2 breakpoints but was unable to convert. Soderling managed to dig out a tiebreak. It looked like he was going down in straight sets after Federer took a 4-0 and a 5-2 lead. But Soderling made some wicked forehands to take the next 4 points and created a setpoint for himself. Federer managed to save that one but the next one he could not save. Soderling took the 3rd set, 6-7. The fourth was a great set with both players playing great tennis. Both players held serve so yet again a tiebreak had to decide the winner of the set. This time Federer made no mistake. He did had to fight of a setpoint but managed to win the set and the match on his first matchpoint. A great match from Federer which should have ended in 3, but he made it a little more difficult fore himself. Federer will now play a rematch of last years semi-finale versus Novak Djokovic on saturday. The other semi-finale is not yet known. We know Del Potro is in it after breating Cilic, but Nadal and Gonzalez theri match was suspended after rain began to fall down yesterday. Nadal was leading Gonzalez with 7-6 6-6 3-2* in the second set tiebreak.

23.30 USOpen tennis update: Federer has bounced back great from his rather poor performance against Hewitt. He gave Robredo no chance today and beat the Spaniard 7-5 6-2 6-2. Federer was firing on all cilinders today and displayed the form needed to win this years open. The first set was still rather competative as Robredo and Federer both played some good tennis. Federer had one game in which he had to fight of some breakpoints as opposed to Robredo who had to fight for his games most of the time. At 5-5 he was unable to hold and Federer took the lead. He served out the match with ease and therefore won it. The second went even easier. Federer broke Robredo at 1-1 to take the lead with a set and a break. He held and broke Robredo's next game as well. He went on to 5-1* and had a setpoint on Robredo's serve. He couldn't take it and Robredo went on to win his game. At *5-2 Federer served it out convincingly. In the third again Federer played brilliantly and overclassed Robredo on all departments. A few breaks and holds later Federer took the match. A very, very convincing victory today. Hopefully he can continue the way he is playing. Then a 6th consecutive title is within his reach. Federer will now play Soderling for the third consecutive time in a Grand Slam on wednesday. Federer leads Soderling 11-0. Let's hope he makes it 12-0. Pictures:

23.37 Update:
Added lots and lots of pictures from
www.rogerfederer.com member Krist, check them out: Preview: All other pictures here: US Open 2009 ------------------ USOpen tennis update: Federer defeats Hewitt to reach 4th round Well, Federer is through to the 4th round after a pretty bad match against Hewitt, 4-6 6-3 7-5 6-4. This was a very wierd match with good patches from Federer and very bad patches. It started quite good. Winning the first service game at love, looking good on Hewitts serve, even breaking him early to take a *4-2 lead. But at this point, at 40-0 Federer, things went from bad to worse. Suddenly Federer was spraying, especially forehands, all over the place. His movement was bad and therefore his shots were bad as well. He lost the next 4 games in a row. Hewitt took the first set 6-4 when there was nothing to really worry about. Federer was pretty much in control but made 24 UE all of a sudden and as said, lost the first set. Federer then had to do something else. He tried to do a little bit less to just stay in the rally and play with more control. This seemed to work because he again to the lead. He broke Hewitt at 2-1* and moved on to take a 5-2* lead. Hewitt held his serve and Federer served it out, 6-3. Now it was still not a great set from Federer because he still made quite some crazy errors, but he kept it under control. He had to fight off a couple of break back points for Hewitt, but he managed. The third set was going to be a key factor in this match in my opinion. The one that was going to win that really had a good chance to take the match. But as all greats do, Federer found a way to take it. He again had to fight off multiple break points as he was still not playing, and particulary moving, well. He had chances at 4-4 to break Hewitt, which he did not manage to do. But at 5-5 he did. He served out the set and took it 7-5. The fourt then was a prey for Federer. He jumped to a *5-2 lead and had a chance to serve it out. Unfortunately he didn't. Small flashbacks of the Tsonga match at Montreal flashed through fans' minds. But at *5-4 he managed to do it. He won the fouth set by 6 games to 4. This is a match to forget pretty fast and move on to the next. I mean, Federer did in patches play good tennis, but all in all it was very sloppy. But he is through and that's all that matters! Oh I forgot to mention he even had an awkward fall in the match, check it out HERE He will now play against either James Blake or Tommy Robredo on monday. 12.45 USOpen tennis update: Federer is through to the last 32 after battling past Greul. He beat the German 6-3 7-5 7-5. In a match that was defenitely tougher than his first match Federer was made to work to beat Greul. The first set was not really that difficult. Gruel looked like he was still searching a bit, trying to figure out what to do. Federer did not have to do that and easily took the first set by breaking the German once, 6-3.
Gruel noticed that what he had done in the first se obviously
was not working and started a different tactic. He just went all
out on every point. Playing very aggressive tennis and trying to
put pressure on Federer. This was having more succes. He got
some more unforced errors, but also made a lot of points with
his all or nothing approach. In the second set Federer did not
really get a chance to break his opponent. At 5-4* Federer
serving, he even got two break points, and at that score, even
set points.
Most players would fade away after being down 2 sets to love
against a player like Federer but Gruel did not. He kept playing
aggressive al or nothing tennis and was still having succes with
it. He broke Federer and got to a A little bit more difficult this match was then first, but the end result was never in doubt. A good match for Federer to finetune his game.
Federer now plays Hewitt. All pictures from today: PAGE 2 All pictures from the USOpen : PAGE 1 / PAGE 2

20.52 Update: Highlights added. Created by juv26! USOpen tennis update: Federer is through to the next round after easing past Wildcard player Devin Britton. As expected it was a cakewalk for Federer. Britton gave it all he got but it was never enough for the player ranked 1370. Britton had only won 1 match at ATP tour level. It would have been the biggest upset in history of tennis if he had won today. The good news for Britton is that he did managed to break Federer twice, once in set 2 and once in set 3. Too bad for him Federer broke right back the next game. In a little less than an hour and a half Federer was done. He broke britton twice in every set, but only in the first set he was not broken himself. Also good to see was Mirka being back for the first time after she gave birth to the twins: She's looking good and it is great to see her again! Federer will play his next match against Simon Gruel on Wednesday. Greul beat Lapentti in a 5th set tiebreak. Pictures from today: All Round 1

28-08-2009 10.00 USOpen tennis update: The draw is out! Federer will play his first match against American Devin Britton. Britton is 1364th in the world. So, with all due respect of course, this should be an easy first round. After that match Federer would meet Greul or a qualifier. In round three a Hewitt is a potential opponent. After that he could play Robredo or Blake. Later on he could meet Soderling again, or Davydenko. In the semifinal he is likely to meet either Djokovic or Roddick. The other half of the draw include guys like Murray, Nadal, Del Potro, Tsonga and more. For the complete draw click HERE. Federer also attended the draw: All USOpen pictures HERE
