Federer once again showed great form in his 6-3 6-4 beating of
Nikolay Davydenko today in Doha. With this win Federer gets his
first title of the season.
Federer is playing some great tennis so far. After two not so
good performances earlier this tournament he upped his game
massively and is looking good for his Australian Open defense in
one week. The match had just started and Davydenko was already
3-0 behind. Federer was sublime. Both players kept serve for the
rest of the set with Federer pushing Davydenko in each game. In
the end it was 6-3 to Federer.
Davydenko looked to be keeping up with Federer a bit more in the
second set, but once Federer got the break he knew he had no
chance. Federer eased to victory with great tennis; 6-3 6-4.
Federer's next tournament is the Australian Open. He is
defending champion there. The Australian Open will begin in 9
days.
Federer is in the Doha 2011 final. After winning the event in
2005 and 2006 Federer will now have a chance to get a third
title. After mediocre performances against Schoorel and
Chiudinelli Federer really upped his game against both Troicki,
and his latest victim, Tsonga.
Tsonga was no challenge for Federer in the first set. He
dominated with great serving and good groundstrokes. He broke
Tsonga early in the set and never gave the break back. The
second set was a bit tougher although Federer never came close
to losing the set. This time a tiebreak had to decide the set.
Federer proved to be too strong in that tiebreak and finished
the match with a 6-3 7-6 victory.
Federer will now play the final against Davydenko who dismantled
Nadal. The final will be played at 18.00 local time.
Federer has beaten the Dutch
upcoming player Thomas Schoorel in 2 sets 7-6(3) 6-3. But it was
not an easy match. Not because Federer did not play so good, but
because of the unexpected qualities of the dutchman. With a big
serve, big forehand and backhand Schoorel proved to be a tough
opponent. Federer did not manage to get breakpoints on
Schoorel's service in the first set. Schoorel got 4, including 3
successive setpoints. But all those setpoints were swiftly
dismantled by Federer. In the tiebreak Federer proved to be the
more experienced player and took that.
In the second set Schoorel first continued to keep his thing
going, but in his second service game he got a bit sloppy. A
couple errors and Federer took advantage of that. He broke
Schoorel. The dutchmen looked like he had given up but continued
to keep fighting and managed to get some more games. But the end
result was never in doubt.
Something worth mentioning was the tweeter Federer hit again.
Not like his last couple, but like the one against Henman at the
US Open in 06. So again a bit of Brilliance by the great man.
Nadal has beaten Federer in the final of the Abu Dhabi
exhibition tournament. Nadal took both tiebreaks and won
7-6 7-6.
Even though it was an exhibition, both players at times produced
some great rallys. But at times you could also see this was
still just an exhibition. Neither player went for it 100%. At
match point Federer did not even a call that looked to be in and
was called out very late. Both players seem to think: this is
enough.
Federer (and Nadal) will now both be playing in Doha, starting
tomorrow. Federer will most likely not play until tuesday or
wednesday.
Here we are, at the end of the old year, the start of Federer's
new year; 2011.
He started today against Soderling. And he started the new
tennis year the best way he could: with a victory. He defeated
the Swede 6-7 6-3 6-3. So it's a nice start to this, hopefully,
great season. Remember these are just exhibition matches so no
points are given. He also only plays 2 matches. He will play in
the final tomorrow against either Rafael Nadal or Tomas Berdych.

FEDERER DEFEATS RIVAL NADAL TO WIN FIFTH TITLE AT SEASON FINALE
World No. 2 Roger Federer won his fifth title at the Barclays ATP World Tour
Finals on Sunday when he defeated Rafael Nadal 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in a gripping
finale at The O2 in London.
The Swiss also won the coveted year-end championships in 2003 (d. Agassi)
and 2004 (d. Hewitt) in Houston and again in 2006 (d. Blake) and 2007 (d.
Ferrer) in Shanghai. He was also the runner-up in 2005 and has compiled a
staggering 34-7 event record.
As the undefeated champion of the world’s biggest indoor tennis tournament,
Federer received 1,500 South African Airways 2010 ATP Ranking points and the
maximum amount of $1,630,000 in prize money. It is the fourth time that he
has been crowned the undefeated champion at the season finale, having
dropped only one set this week.
It was the first time for 24 years that the Top 2 players on the ATP World
Tour had contested the title match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. In
1986, No. 1 Ivan Lendl defeated No. 2 Boris Becker. Federer recorded his
eighth win in 22 career meetings with Nadal (Nadal leads 14-8); he also
defeated the Spaniard at the season finale in the semi-finals in 2006 and
2007.
Such was the excitement surrounding a Federer-Nadal finale at The O2 that
the 17,500 Centre Court crowd featured many celebrities, including
footballing legend Diego Maradona, Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones,
American actor Kevin Spacey, Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Her Royal
Highness Princess Beatrice of York.
Federer struck the first blow in the contest, breaking serve with an angled
backhand winner crosscourt to lead 5-3 in the first set. After conceding the
opener, Nadal fought back strongly, breaking serve in the fourth game of the
second set before going on to level the match with a sliced backhand past
the net-rushing Federer. The Spaniard was powerless against Federer’s
brilliance in the final set, though, and the Swiss broke serve twice to seal
victory in one hour and 37 minutes.
The 29-year-old Federer came into the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on a
red-hot run of form that had seen him lose just two matches since
squandering two match points in a five-set defeat to Novak Djokovic in the
US Open semi-finals. His 21 victories since then is the highest number of
wins he has ever recorded post the US Open.
The Basel native won his fifth tour-level title of the year, and the 66th of
his career. By winning his 16th Grand Slam singles crown at the Australian
Open (d. Murray) in January, Federer opened and closed his season with two
of the game’s biggest titles for the fourth time. He also bookended his
2004, 2006 and 2007 seasons with victories at the Australian Open and the
Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
Federer’s three other titles this season came at the Western & Southern
Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati (d. Fish), the If Stockholm Open (d.
Mayer) and the Swiss Indoors Basel (d. Djokovic). He closes 2010 with a
65-13 match record.
FEDERER PERFECT IN GROUP PLAY; STORMS INTO SFS TO EDGE OUT SODERLING
Four-time former champion Roger Federer extended his record to 15-1 against
Robin Soderling of Sweden with a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory on Thursday at the
Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. He finished his three Group B matches
unbeaten.
The Swiss superstar has now reached the semi-finals in eight of his nine
appearances at the season finale. The result means Soderling is eliminated
from semi-final contention upon percentage of games won. Semi-Final
Scenarios
Federer has yet to drop a set this week after a 6-1, 6-4 win over Spaniard
David Ferrer on Sunday and a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Andy Murray of Scotland
on Tuesday. He has a 32-7 tournament record.
"I'm happy I was able to come out today and play a good, tough, solid match
against a player who I thought was in good shape," said Federer. "I
purposely didn't want to know the calculations before today's match, whereas
I was in the loop very clearly what I kind of needed to do last year, which
I think played on my mind a little bit.
"I just wanted to come out and try to play as good a match as I can. Losing
is never a solution to trying to win a tournament. That's why I'm happy that
all three matches [were] straight sets, [and I did] not waste any energy.
I'm playing real well [and] I'm through to the semis."
FEDERER OUTCLASSES MURRAY TO STAND ON VERGE OF
SEMI-FINAL QUALIFICATION
Roger Federer now has a 31-7 record at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
Four-time former champion Roger Federer outclassed Andy Murray at the
Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Tuesday to stand on the verge of
qualifying for the semi-finals from Group B.
The Swiss superstar dropped just eight points on serve against an under-par
Murray for a 6-4, 6-2 win in 76 minutes. Murray committed 26 unforced errors
and was constantly rushed into error with Federer winning 14 of 17 points at
the net. It was the pair's 14th meeting (Murray 8-6).
“I don't think he played his best match,” said Federer. “He came out and
made some mistakes. Maybe it was due to my good play. From my side, I was
obviously very happy. It was a good match. I played tough and solid from
start to finish.”
Federer will now wait to see if Spaniard David Ferrer beats indoor
specialist Robin Soderling of Sweden in the evening session to qualify for
the semi-finals from the round-robin group.
“I think on a level, I saved energy so far,” admitted Federer, who beat
David Ferrer on Sunday. “It's been good. I've had the days off in between
[and] only having to play two sets, it's nice at the end of the season.
“I hope, if I make it to the semis, then I'm fresh and really ready to go.
Because last year I played four matches and they all went the distance. I'm
excited to play Soderling. I have a great record against him. I hope I can
play the same level like I did the last two.”
Right from the start Murray was not at his fluent best, with Federer
creating one break point opportunity in the opening game with a backhand
pass. Momentarily the 23-year-old Scot kept Federer at bay, but he was
broken to love in his second service game.
Federer, who has lost just four of his past 36 matches since Wimbledon,
capitalised on Murray’s struggle for rhythm on his serves and backhand, and
appeared to be running away with the set in front of a near-capacity 17,500
spectators at The O2.
Murray’s big chance to break back came in the ninth game of the 36-minute
first set, when he had Federer serving at 0/30 after the World No. 2 hit a
forehand long and was passed by Murray at the net.
Federer regained control with an overhead put-away, a forehand winner and
running forehand volley. His first set point opportunity came when Murray
drilled a forehand wide. Murray ended the first set having committed 13
unforced errors.
The 29-year-old Federer made a blistering start to the second set when he
hit a stunning forehand winner on his third break point opportunity in the
first game. He confirmed the break with a love service hold to keep Murray
on the back foot.
The crowd expected a response from Murray, but they were to be disappointed.
Murray squandered a 30/0 lead at 0-2, with Federer winning four straight
points to put himself firmly on course for victory. Two games later, Murray
fell to 15/40 at 0-4 but it was too little too late.
Federer improved to a 31-7 tournament record, when Murray hit a forehand
into the net on match point.
“I returned poorly [and] served poorly,” said Murray, who beat Soderling in
his opening group match on Sunday. “Against (Roger), that's not going to win
you the match.
“I felt okay from the back of the court, not unbelievable, but there were
quite a few good rallies. I probably served about 30 per cent of first
serves in, [so] you're not going to beat one of the top players serving like
that.
“I just tried to stay calm, tried to find a way and it didn't happen today.
But I didn't feel flat on the court at all.”
Diego Maradona, the legendary footballer from Argentina, was a spectator in
Federer’s box. British model and actress Kelly Brook also attended the
afternoon session match.
Four-time former Barclays ATP World Tour Finals champion Roger Federer
notched his 30th career win at the season finale Sunday at The O2 in London
as he dismissed Spanish contender David Ferrer 6-1, 6-4 in Group B.
The 29-year-old Federer is making his ninth straight appearance at the
season finale and improved to a 30-7 event record. He won back-to-back
titles in 2003-04 and 2006-07, and reached the semi-finals (l. to Davydenko)
in the event’s first year in London last year.
“I think it's wonderful,” said Federer, speaking about the elite eight-man
event. “The players love it. We're all here. It's really prestigious. That's
what it's supposed to be and has been for 40 years. I've been a part of them
nine times already.
“Having the [Barclays ATP] World Tour Finals here in London makes great
sense because it's in a great time zone, in a country that loves sports,
especially tennis. I think it's great for the fans to see that. All the
sessions are basically sold out, there's such a run on tickets. So it's hard
to choose a better place than London, I feel."
In a rematch of the 2007 final in Shanghai, Federer raced to a 4-0 lead and
despite dropping his serve in the fifth game, comfortably wrapped up the
first set in 34 minutes. Ferrer, famed for his resilience and fighting
qualities, engineered five break point chances in the second set, including
two in the final game, but could not convert and Federer sealed victory in
87 minutes courtesy of a service break in the fifth game.
“I thought it was a tough match,” admitted Federer. “Looking at the score
line, it doesn't reflect how tough it was. There were many close games,
especially in the second set. Possibly the first set could have gone faster,
too.
“All in all, I'm really happy the way I was able to get out of the first
match here, starting off with a feisty Top 10 player is never easy. It's
sort of a first round, that's why I'm really pleased with tonight's
performance.”
Since suffering a quarter-final exit at Wimbledon in July, Federer has been
in rampant form, losing only four matches in a spell that saw him win three
titles in Cincinnati (d. Fish), Stockholm (d. Mayer) and Basel (d. Djokovic),
and reach the finals in Toronto and Shanghai, losing to Murray both times.
He is chasing his fifth title of the year, having also won his 16th Grand
Slam title at the Australian Open in January (d. Murray).
Federer next will face home favourite Andy Murray, whom he defeated in three
sets at The O2 last year also in the round robin stage.
In just a few days the World Tour
Final in London will begin. On Sunday Murray will play Soderling and Federer
will play Ferrer. The group came together for a picture session earlier.
Top seed Roger Federer matched his best performance at the BNP Paribas
Masters, reaching the quarter-finals for a fourth time with a 6-4, 6-3 win
over Czech Radek Stepanek on Thursday evening in Paris.
Stepanek held level with the World No. 2 through most of the first set, even
earning the first two break point chances, before Federer gained control,
winning a string of five straight games to establish a set and 3-0 lead. The
Swiss closed out the match in one hour and 19 minutes with consecutive love
service games.
"He was serving good, he was accurate, he was coming in a lot, which I kind
of expected," said Federer. " I just kind of felt it was gonna be a tough
match to play. Thank God I already had a couple of really good return games
and a good 10, 15 minutes which I was able to make a difference on, and then
I could cruise home. I survived a scare early on when I was down break point
and he was playing well, so it was a good match from my side."
Federer has now won 15 of his past 16 matches, reaching the final at the
Shanghai Rolex Masters (l. to Murray) and claiming back-to-back titles in
Stockholm and Basel, and will look to continue his form when he takes on
Austrian Jurgen Melzer in the quarter-finals.
This will be the third meeting this season between the two 29 year olds, who
had not played each other in tour-level action prior to this year. Federer
won their fourth-round matches at Wimbledon and the US Open in straight
sets.
While Federer has reached the final at the eight other ATP World Tour
Masters 1000 tournaments, he has yet to advance beyond the quarter-finals at
the BNP Paribas Masters, falling at this stage in 2002-03 and '08.
World No. 2 Roger Federer won his hometown title at the Swiss Indoors Basel
for a record fourth time as he avenged his 2009 final defeat to Novak
Djokovic with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over the Serb in Sunday’s final.
Basel-born Federer captured his 65th career tour-level title, taking him to
fourth place on the Open Era Singles Titles List, one ahead of American Pete
Sampras. It was the Swiss No. 1’s fourth title of the season, adding to
triumphs at the Australian Open (d. Murray), Cincinnati (d. Fish) and
Stockholm (d. Mayer) two weeks ago. He is the third player this year to win
four tour-level titles, following Rafael Nadal (7) and Sam Querrey (4).
Top seed Federer made a fast start to his 18th meeting with Djokovic and
broke serve in the third game as he quickly wrapped up a one-set lead. The
second-seeded Djokovic was quick to respond, though, breaking Federer’s
serve for just the second time this week in the second game of the second
set to level the match.
Riding an eight-match winning streak, though, the confident Federer kept his
focus in the deciding set and from 1-1 won five successive games to seal
victory in just under two hours. Since squandering two match points in a
five-set defeat to Djokovic in the US Open semi-finals, Federer has beaten
the Belgrade native twice, also in the Shanghai semi-finals, and extended
his career-lead in their head-to-head series to 12-6.
The 29-year-old Federer improved to a 38-7 record in Basel, where he once
served as a ball boy, and has won 24 of his past 25 matches at the ATP World
Tour 500 indoor hard-court tennis tournament. He won three successive titles
from 2006-2008 before finishing runner-up to Djokovic last year; he also
reached the final in 2000-2001.
World No. 3 Djokovic was contesting his fourth tour-level final of the
season and dropped to a 2-2 mark; he won the titles in Dubai (d. Youzhny)
and Beijing (d. Ferrer) and finished runner-up to Nadal in his third Grand
Slam final at the US Open.
Both the 23-year-old Djokovic and Federer have secured their places in the
eight-man field at the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, to be
held at The O2 in London from 21-28 November.

FEDERER WINS 64TH CAREER TITLE
World No. 2 Roger Federer won the 64th tour-level title of his career Sunday
as he defeated Germany’s Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-3 to add the If Stockholm Open
crown to his glittering collection.
The 29-year-old Federer, who has already surpassed Pete Sampras on the Open
Era Grand Slam titles list, has now tied the American for fourth place on
the Open Era overall titles list. It was the Swiss player’s third tour-level
title of the season, following his triumphs at the Australian Open (d.
Murray), where he won his 16th major title, and Cincinnati (d. Fish).
"It means the world to me to win this title. It’s always nice winning in a
place like this with a tennis heritage and a lot of history,” said Federer.
Federer, who has already qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals,
received 250 South African Airways 2010 ATP Ranking points as winner of the
ATP World Tour 250 indoor hard-court tennis tournament in Sweden. It is the
18th different country in which Federer has won an ATP World Tour title.
The top seeded Federer has come up against some stern resistance on his run
through to the Stockholm title, including coming from a set down to defeat
Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarter-finals, and was challenged by Mayer as the
unseeded German broke to lead 4-3 in the first set. Federer’s response was
swift and potent, though, as he reeled off three straight games to clinch a
one-set lead.
The second set was a more straightforward affair for Federer, who broke
serve in the sixth game before closing out victory in 63 minutes. It was his
52nd tour-level victory of the season and his second appearance in an ATP
World Tour final in two weeks, having finished runner-up to Andy Murray a
week ago at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.
World No. 47 Mayer was bidding to win his first ATP World Tour title after a
stellar week, including a quarter-final win over No. 5 Robin Soderling. The
27 year old dropped to a 0-3 mark in ATP World Tour finals, having also
finished runner-up in Sopot in 2005 (l. to Monfils) and 2006 (l. to
Davydenko).
World No. 2 Roger Federer advanced to his seventh tour-level final of the
season Saturday after breaking down Ivan Ljubicic’s defences to defeat the
Croatian 7-6(5), 6-2 at the If Stockholm Open.
The Swiss, who battled from a set down to beat countryman Stanislas Wawrinka
on Friday, was nearly faced with the same task against Ljubicic as the
fourth seed served for the first set at 5-4, having broken Federer’s serve
in the third game. However, Federer hit back to level in the 10th game and
clinched the opening set on a tie-break.
From 1-2 down in the second set, Federer then reeled off five straight
games, breaking the famed Ljubicic serve in the fifth and seventh games, to
seal victory in 77 minutes. It was his 13th victory in 16 meetings with
Ljubicic and his 10th straight win over the Croatian. He improved to a 51-12
match record on the season.
The 29-year-old Federer is coming off a runner-up showing in Shanghai (l. to
Murray) and is bidding to win his third tour-level title of the season,
following victories at the Australian Open (d. Murray) and Cincinnati (d.
Fish). The Swiss, who played his 900th match in the second round, has a
63-28 record in tour-level finals.
Roger Federer put his 50th match win of the season in the books Friday night
in Stockholm, but not before surviving an early scare against fellow Swiss
Stanislas Wawrinka. Federer rallied from a set down and a break down to beat
his countryman 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and advance to the semi-finals of the ATP World
Tour 250 tennis tournament, which he last played in 2000.
"It was very close obviously," Federer said. "The score was 6-2, 2-0, which
is a clear indication that you're in trouble. I found a way to come back
just in time. I was happy to be able to come through this time. I think the
match against Murray [in Sunday's Shanghai Rolex Master's final] helped me
today."
Federer has now reached the 50-wins milestone for nine consecutive years,
tying a mark also reached by Pete Sampras. Jimmy Connors holds the record
for 13 consecutive years with 50 or more match wins. Guillermo Vilas and
Stefan Edberg each passed the milestone for 10 consecutive years.
Federer improved to a 6-1 career record against Wawrinka, whom he defeated
in straight sets at Roland Garros this year when they last met. Federer next
plays Croatian veteran Ivan Ljubicic, against whom he has won nine
consecutive matches and leads 12-3 in career meetings. But it will be their
first meeting in more than two years.
Federer also spoke about the opportunity to hit with former World No. 1
Stefan Edberg. "It was a big moment for me. I'd never hit with him before.
He's the last hero that I hadn't played with before. It was nice talking to
him in the locker room yesterday. We started talking about hitting a few
balls. He was in a suit and I didn't even know if he had his gear or not."
Swiss superstar Roger Federer
recorded his 49th match win of the season in his 900th tour-level match
(727-173 overall) at the If Stockholm Open on Thursday.
World No. 2 and top seed Federer, playing at the ATP World Tour 250 indoor
tournament for the first time in 10 years, defeated American Taylor Dent
6-1, 6-2 in 51 minutes to become the first active player to reach the
milestone. He has never retired in a match during his career.
"In 1998 I played my first match and now I just played my 900th," said
Federer. "It's crazy. I have a great win-loss record, and I couldn't have
asked for a better career. And it was nice to actually win my 900th match."
Federer wrapped up the first set in 18 minutes, winning 16 of 21 service
points and converting both break point opportunities he created. He broke
serve in the second and seventh games of the second set to keep alive his
chances of lifting his 64th tour-level title to draw level with Pete Sampras.
"Obviously it felt great walking out on the court and getting an early lead,"
said the Swiss. "It was a good hour of tennis, and I hardly made any
mistakes."
Dent, currently No. 101 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings,
dropped to a 10-18 match record on the season.
Federer is in Stockholm right now preparing for this
weeks tournament. Yesterday he practiced with Ljubicic and played a short
doubles match with 2 kids and Ivan. Pictures and images next, but first an
interview with Federer.
Unfortunately Roger Federer was not able to win the
Shanghai Masters. He was beaten in the final by Andy Murray: 6-3 6-2. The
Scot proved to be too strong today and Federer's form was nowhere near it
was against Djokovic. Take that and quite some missed opportunities and you
get a scoreline such as this one. But still a great result from Federer.
He will play in Stockholm this week so we will see
plenty of Federer the next few weeks.
Third seed Federer improved to 14-1 lifetime against fifth seed Robin
Soderling with a comprehensive 6-1, 6-1 win over the Swede in just 54
minutes during the evening session in Shanghai.
Soderling won just 38 per cent of service points and had his serve broken
five times. The 26-year-old Monte-Carlo resident, who is close to clinching
the fifth spot at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in November, dropped to
a 47-18 match record on the season.
Federer lost 11 points on serve and hit five aces for his 47th win of the
year. In January, the World No. 3 won his 16th Grand Slam championship
trophy at the Australian Open (d. Murray).
"It's a great match for me," said Federer. "Surprising that it all went so
fast. [It was] somewhat close in the beginning to get the 4-1 lead. I guess
that was the hard work.
"After that, I was just able to roll away with the score. He started to
struggle and it got more difficult. I know he didn't have one of his best
days."
Federer lost the second-fewest games against a Top 10 opponent in his career
with his victory over Soderling. It was Federer's 127th career Top 10 match
win. At the 2005 Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, Federer defeated No. 9
Gaston Gaudio 6-0, 6-0, in the semi-finals. The last time he lost only two
games in a match came in March 2008 in Indian Wells, where he defeated
Nicolas Mahut 6-1, 6-1, in the third round.
Federer expects "tougher rallies" against Djokovic tomorrow.
"Tomorrow is going to be different, more difficult, a bit more tactical,"
said Federer. "We've always had good matches against each other, especially
on the hard courts. They've always been very even."
Federer is looking to reach his fourth consecutive ATP World Tour Masters
1000 final. He finished runner-up in Madrid and Toronto and won Cincinnati.
Roger Federer will face
big-hitting Swede Robin Soderling Friday in the quarter-finals after beating
Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4 Thursday. Federer is chasing his third title of the
year (Australian Open, Cincinnati) and his 17th career ATP World Tour
Masters 1000 title.
Federer, who leads Soderling 13-1 in career meetings, said that he expected
Soderling to bring the heat Friday. Federer won in straight sets when they
last met at the US Open, but Soderling claimed his first victory over
Federer when they met in the Roland Garros quarter-finals.
“I'm looking forward to a tough match. Even though I have a great record
against him, I have a lot of respect for him and am excited about the match.
Definitely going to bring the heat on his serve and try to hit hard forehand
or backhand.
"It's going to be very different to the US Open. It's going to be very
different to the French Open. We've had the last couple matches in really
tough conditions. It was raining during the French. It was super windy
during the US Open. We're looking forward to something a little bit normal."
Federer has given his first press
conference in Shanghai. Here is the transcript of that event. The pictures
are underneath. The pictures are from the press conference, from training,
and some various of Federer in Shanghai.
THE MODERATOR: Good afternoon. Questions for Roger.
Q. After the US Open, you didn't participate in any tournaments. I would
like to know what you did until now.
ROGER FEDERER: Well, first of all, I had to recover. It was a tough stretch
in America. I played really well. I played finals, a victory, and the semis.
It was a tough match against Novak in the end. I felt I needed some rest
first of all to get mentally and physically fresh again.
Once I felt I was ready to go again, I started to work out extremely hard. I
had almost three weeks on my hands which I used to do a lot of fitness and a
lot of tennis.
Had a good time. Felt great. Was able to work hard, spend time with the
family. I'm ready to go here now.
Q. You used to come to Shanghai every year. How do you feel this time after
two years' break?
ROGER FEDERER: One and a half years, not quite two years. I was here for the
Masters Cup. But it almost feels like two years.
I've missed Shanghai as well last year. But I just was too tired, to
exhausted. With everything that happened through the summer, with marriage,
kids, French Open, Wimbledon, the American summer, I just needed a rest. So
it gave me six weeks off. That really allowed me a chance to, you know, find
my energy again for what's to come at the end of the year and almost next
year, where I played great in Australia. It's kind of paid off.
But this year I definitely wanted to make the trip here to Shanghai. The
fans are amazing here. I am probably one of the only ones here who was here
in 2002 as well for the Masters Cup held for the first time at the EXPO.
Great memories. I always played great here. I never had a bad tournament.
Now that it's a Masters 1000, me having also opened the stadium here, it's
extra special coming here and playing outdoors in Shanghai, which I'm very
excited about.
So far I've been able to see many fans. They all seem very excited. The same
can only be said from my side, as well.
Q. I see that you have Gary back with you as your physio. Where is Stephane?
Is he taking a break?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, he's taking a break and he'll be back probably by
Basel.
Q. I think Shanghai is the first tournament that you were in a tournament
without your family in your company.
ROGER FEDERER: It's been a while, yeah.
Q. Do you miss them? You go back to your hotel, you're by yourself, you
don't have Mirka or the twins, do you feel bored?
ROGER FEDERER: It's bored, yeah (laughter).
It's a bit slower, that's for sure. But I have good friends here. We have a
good time, you know. It's busy here anyway. I have a lot of things to do
with some of my great sponsors. Also media I'm doing quite a bit. For that
side I'm kept busy. Obviously, it also allows me to sleep a bit more and
practice hard.
That's what I'm doing really. That fills up the day a bit. But we make sure
we have nice dinners at the end of the day. But clearly it's a different
week this time around that they're not here. I do miss them, yes, of course.
Q. You said you've been practicing very hard during three weeks. Is it to
prepare the end of the season but also a way to prepare the beginning of the
next season?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I would think so. I mean, the yearend season was very
short. It's been like this for a couple years now. Having only four weeks
off after the World Tour finals is not a whole lot. Plus we have Christmas.
I usually have a tendency also to play one or two XO's. Last year I didn't
play any XO's at all.
This year we're playing one of the exhibitions against Rafa in Zurich for
the Roger Federer Foundation. That's also going to take a few days away
again. That's also for sure one of the reasons I'm using one of those last
few weeks to prepare for next season, as well. Yes, that's correct.
Q. Do you find by your standards this year could have been termed something
of a disappointment? Do you think this tournament could be a way of
salvaging that in some respect?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, the season's not over yet. Let's not come to the
conclusion here that this has been a bad year or that I'm not happy with it.
I won the Australian Open. I think I played well at the US Open, was a point
away from making the finals, and then you never know. Wimbledon obviously
was a disappointment and the French, because I was defending champion in
both those tournaments, but I wasn't able to come through.
It's the way it is, you know. I had some tough losses this year with match
points sometimes, some really close matches which maybe in the past have
gone my way.
I think I was able to turn it around a little bit actually in Toronto and
Cincinnati. I think I had some good wins and also I played really well at
the US Open. It's unfortunate I couldn't come through.
But, I mean, I still have five tournaments to play. This season is far from
over. I feel like I'm playing really well and feeling well. We'll see how
the season plays out and then I'll make a statement how the season was.
Q. Is Paul with you?
ROGER FEDERER: Yes.
Q. We saw you obviously together in New York. In the off tournament weeks,
what sort of work have you and he been doing together?
ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, well, first of all he's here, yes. Paul is here. Severin
came first to Dubai, then Paul was supposed to join us at some stage. He got
sick. He couldn't come for a week or so. He only came for the end of the
buildup. So I did all the buildup with Severin, except the last three days
when Paul arrived.
Q. That was in Dubai?
ROGER FEDERER: That was in Dubai, yes. I was there the whole time between
New York and here.
And then he's going to come here. Then I'll do Stockholm, Basel and Paris
with Severin. Paul might join us in Paris. Then we'll do the World Tour
Finals together.
So we didn't have that much time together to work on stuff with Paul. He's
in constant talks with Severin, you know, what we could do. Severin has his
ideas, as well. We're working on the right things. Then obviously Paul is
going to come for the offseason in December to Dubai and we'll work there.
In February we'll have another buildup. We'll see who's gonna be there.
It's important I'll have some good time with him again, keep it on a regular
basis. Things are going well.
Q. Is there a freshness to it? Does it bring something new to the whole
thing?
ROGER FEDERER: Clearly, yeah. That was the idea. Otherwise I wouldn't have,
you know, done something with him. I had a long enough test period to figure
out if I did like what he was saying, and I did like it. I thought it was
interesting. I thought it was something different, something new, with a lot
of experience.
I'm looking forward to the upcoming weeks: this week and the rest of the
year with him.
Q. We all know in 2002 it's the first time you came to Shanghai for the
Masters Cup. After several years, how does your mental state change between
these years? What's most impressive about the changes for the city and the
stadium and the tournament?
ROGER FEDERER: I mean, a lot has changed since 2002. I maybe had, I don't
know, four titles. Now I have 63 I think. I'm not even sure. So it's been an
amazing run for me, the last eight years, with a lot of success, incredible
streaks, a lot of fun, becoming somewhat of a national hero back home in
Switzerland, which is a hard thing to do.
You know, being here in 2002 obviously has been very different to being here,
let's say, two years ago. When you come back now, every time you play,
you're one of the big favorites. In 2002, I was just happy to be part of the
tournament. Only later did I realize the power and the potential, you know,
I had, and especially this country had, you know, to embrace tennis and to
see what they really wanted to achieve here in this part of the world,
especially here in Shanghai where people seem so excited about this sport.
There's flags everywhere from the airport when you arrive till here, to the
Qizhong Stadium.
The excitement they have to come here, it's a lot of fun for the players.
Have an incredibly strong fan base it seems here in China. That's why I
loved playing at the Olympics in Beijing and finally I'm back here again
after missing last year. So I feel like I'm very connected to China.
Q. Switzerland is out of the Davis Cup World Group. What is your feeling
about that?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, disappointment. Obviously I'm not happy about it. But
it's something I couldn't control. I said I'm not going to go to Kazakhstan.
It was a tough trip. We always do that when we saw the draw come out. We'll
talk about the future in the next few months now.

Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and other ATP World Tour stars have used their
tennis skills to create individual masterpieces by hitting paint-covered
tennis balls against large art canvases. Each canvas was overlaid with a
stencilled image, which, when removed, revealed a unique self-portrait
showing one of the player’s signature moves on court. Celebrating a player’s
qualification for the Barclays ATP World Tour finals, the artwork created by
the final eight players will be exhibited for public viewing and later
auctioned off for charity.
Here are some pictures of Federer's clothes for

DJOKOVIC SAVES 2 M.P. TO BEAT FEDERER
World No. 3 Novak Djokovic saved two match points to upset Roger Federer in
a pulsating 5-7, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 semi-final victory Saturday to advance
to the US Open final. Now the Serb must back up from the 3 hr., 44 min match
in less than 24 hours to tackle World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who is looking to
become the youngest man in the Open Era to complete a career Grand Slam by
winning his first US Open title.
“Anything I have left I will leave on the court tomorrow," vowed Djokovic,
who lost to Federer in the 2007 US Open final. "I am tired. There's no
secret about that. For four sets I've been quite okay. Fifth set was very
intensive mentally and physically and took a lot out of me. But I'm sure I
will find the strength to give my best tomorrow.”
Serving at 4-5 in the fifth set, Djokovic fell behind 15/40 but saved both
match points with a swinging forehand volley and a down-the-line forehand
winner. The Serb then broke Federer in the next game and his nerve was again
tested in the final game of the match when he fought off a break point that
would have seen the match come down to a fifth-set tie-break. On his first
match point, Djokovic trumped Federer in a 22-shot rally to close out the
match.
Djokovic will attempt to become the first player since Andy Roddick in 2003
to go on to win the US Open title after winning a semi-final in five sets. (Roddick
also saved one match point in his 2003 semi-final against David Nalbandian.)
Djokovic will also attempt to match Juan Martin del Potro’s feat of beating
Federer and Nadal en route to glory at Flushing Meadows.
Although Nadal leads their head-to-head series 14-7, Djokovic has won the
last three meetings, which have all come on hard court. No player has ever
beaten Nadal four times in a row.
Asked what he had learned from three consecutive years of defeats to Federer
at the US Open, Djokovic said: “I had to take the chances when I was down
match points. That’s why [Federer] is the best player that ever played this
game, because he always plays his best tennis in the most important moments.
It was almost the case again today. I got a little bit nervous end of the
first and third sets, and that's why I lost those sets. But anything except
that, I think I played overall a great game, fighting really and being
aggressive when I had chance, and defending well.
“I just knew I have to be patient and not lose my emotions too much, because
that was the case in the past where I was losing the momentum with him. He
uses that nervousness of the opponent. He feels it."
Djokovic used his down-the-line backhand to open up the court, from where he
could attack the Federer backhand, and played some exceptional defense when
stretched wide by Federer on both wings. He also passed a significant mental
challenge, having lost to Federer three consecutive years at Flushing
Meadows.
Although Federer was the more aggressive of the two players and found
success in regular forays to the net, he was ultimately brought undone by 66
unforced errors to Djokovic’s 38. He also struggled on serve, putting just
53 per cent of first serves into play. The five-time ATP World Tour Champion
also paid the price for twice handing back the momentum to Djokovic after
winning the first and third sets.
They are uploaded on a better and
faster host! Even though that will cost me some income for the site, I also
realised that the old host was awful. So enjoy the pictures again. Probably
on of the biggest collection on the internet from Roger Federer.

FEDERER HANDLES WIND & SODERLING
Roger Federer mastered the wind and Robin Soderling at Flushing Meadows
Wednesday night to set up a semi-final showdown with World No. 2 Novak
Djokovic. Chasing a seventh consecutive appearance in the US Open final,
Federer will look for a fourth win in the past four Opens against Djokovic,
whom he defeated in straight sets in the same round one year ago.
As wind frustrated players for the fourth straight day in New York, Federer
adapted much better to the conditions than Soderling, who early in his
career was known as an indoor specialist. The respective ace counts best
reflected how the players fared. Federer, with his clinically efficient
service motion, fired 18 aces; Soderling, with his high toss and brute
power, managed just two.
Federer will hope that last night's slice of history repeating itself
continues in his next match. In 2009 Federer defeated Soderling (albeit it
in four sets) in the quarter-finals before continuing on to beat Djokovic in
straight sets in the semis - and hitting his memorable winning 'tweener to
boot.
And while Federer had high praise for Djokovic when asked to look ahead to
the meeting, he concluded with a gentle reminder that the Serb did not have
history on his side against him in New York: “This obviously is his best
surface… kind of a faster hard court, because he can pick up some incredible
balls, half volley them, redirect them. It helps his serve a bit more and on
the return he can zone in a bit. But for the last three or four years he's
gone through me and he hasn't been able to get it done.”
Soderling started strongly Wednesday night, earning three break points in
Federer's first service game and another chance in the Swiss' third service
game. But all four went unconverted. And when he finally did break (to get
back on serve at 2-2 in the second set) Soderling wasted the opportunity.
Serving in the following game, he dumped an easy bounce overhead from inside
the service line into the net and saw his 40/0 lead quickly evaporate and
Federer break again.
Soderling appeared set to take the match to a fourth set when he broke
Federer for the second time in the match for a 5-3 lead late in the third
set. But Federer responded with back-to-back breaks of his own to wrest the
advantage and seal victory.
In very blustery conditions Federer's serve was outstanding. He made 64
percent of first serves - a great result given the wind - and won 50 of 58
points on his first serve.
Asked if he enjoys playing in the wind, Federer said, “Yeah, because I see
it as a challenge and I see it as an opportunity to play differently… He
definitely had more problems on the serve. Now, from the baseline, look, I
also shanked some balls and I also mistimed a few and misread a few, like we
all did today.
“But I think the serve was today the biggest key, because obviously he's
very famous for serving extremely accurate, extremely hard, over a long
period of time. That's what makes him so hard to beat really. That wasn't
the case today. He struggled to get the pace, the accuracy going, until
midway through the third set when I think he started to hit it a bit better.
Then it was almost too late, really.”
Soderling admitted that he struggled on serve in the wind. “I didn't put so
many first serves in, as I needed to, because of the wind. It was tough for
me. So I could have needed some more first serves. Maybe would have played
better then.
"Given the circumstances, [Roger] played well. He's a good wind player. He
can play really well in the wind. He moves well. He's always in the right
place. So I think he played well."
Reflecting on his Grand Slam season, which included a second consecutive
appearance in the Roland Garros final and a first appearance in the
Wimbledon quarter-finals, Soderling said: “It's been okay. In Australia I
was not so good. Paris and Wimbledon was very good. Here, still the
quarter-finals I didn't play so well, but still a quarter-final. So far it's
been good, but still a lot of tournament coming up, big tournaments, so the
season is not finished yet.”
On his day off Federer decided to
do some walking in New York and to attend a fashion show in the evening:
Federer plays Soderling tonight, the 2nd match after 7 pm.

FEDERER PRODUCES LETHAL COMBINATION
They say it's better to be lucky than good. Roger Federer was both last
night as he defeated Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 to reach the
quarter-finals of the US Open for the seventh consecutive year.
Federer outplayed the Austrian in the first set and then in the second-set
tie-break he benefited from two lucky let cords to take a two-sets lead. A
frustrated Melzer powered his way to a break in the first game of the third
set but soon handed it back as Federer set sail for his fourth straight-sets
victory of the tournament.
Federer advances to play Swede Robin Soderling, whom he defeated in four
sets at this round of the US Open one year ago but whom he lost to in four
sets at Roland Garros in June in their only meeting of 2010.
Federer reached his 26th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final, just one shy
of Jimmy Connors’ all-time record of 27.
"It was a tough match as it was breezy still," Federer said. "It was tough
to play and he's a tough opponent who has done very well this season, so I
am relieved to be through.
"I haven't lost a set so I am very happy. I'd like to play wonderfully every
time but it's not possible, but I am finding a way to win."
Looking ahead to his meeting with Soderling, Federer said: "He's a great
player. He's had an incredible last couple of years. He's always been a
dangerous player but now he's able to do it consistently and he looks like
finishing in the Top five."
Second seed Federer beat Mathieu 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 39 minutes to
book his place in the fourth round. The Swiss superstar has yet to drop a
set at Flushing Meadows this year and has a 54-5 overall tournament record.
He converted four of six break point opportunities and struck 13 aces past
former World No. 12 Mathieu, now at No. 109 in the South African Airways
2010 ATP Rankings.
"The wind was very strong," said Federer. "I think you could tell Mathieu
was really struggling after being down in the score. His serve, his returns,
everything kind of falls into pieces. That's what the wind can do to you. I
kind of felt comfortable, because you can also use it to your advantage and
play really great tennis. You have to be careful with it. After four games
or so, I knew what I could do and what I couldn't do."
Federer came into his 44th straight Grand Slam championship having won the
Western & Southern Financial Group Masters title in Cincinnati (d. Fish). He
has a 42-10 match record on the season.
Roger Federer earned the opportunity to avenge two defeats to
Tomas Berdych this year when he moved into the Rogers Cup
quarter-finals with a 7-6(2), 6-3 win over chip-and-charging
Frenchman Michael Llodra on Thursday in Toronto.
The five-time ATP World Tour Champion fell behind 1-4, 30/30 in
the first set as he struggled to adjust to the net-rushing
tactics of Llodra. But Federer won 12 of the last 17 games to
advance.
“It is fun playing that kind of a style once in a while,” said
the World No. 3. “I kind of miss it, obviously. Having come
through the rankings back in '98, '99, 2000, I was facing many
of those kind of players, especially on the faster courts
indoors.”
Federer, the 2004 and 2006 Toronto champion, fell in the Rogers
Cup quarter-finals last year to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after leading
5-1 in the third set. The Swiss is attempting to snap a
six-month title drought dating back to his 16th Grand Slam
triumph at the Australian Open in January. Also a winner of 16
career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles, Federer's last title
at this level came almost one year ago in Cincinnati.
Seventh seed Berdych worked harder than expected to beat
Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4. The Czech served 11 aces
and saved all five break points he faced.
“I definitely have to go back, and think what didn't go so well
against him and what did work well,” said Federer, who lost to
Berdych at Miami and Wimbledon. “He's definitely on the run
right now, so hope to stop him a bit. He played great in Paris,
at Wimbledon, and also, he beat me in Miami in a tough three
setter where I had match point, so that was a bit of a pity,
obviously. So I hope to learn from those mistakes and come up
with a good game plan tomorrow.”
The 24-year-old Berdych has a 40-13 season match record, already
eclipsing last year’s match wins total (36-26). He reached the
finals this year at Wimbledon (l. to Nadal) and the ATP World
Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Miami (l. to Roddick).
Roger Federer became the all-time match wins
leader in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 action after defeating
Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6(7), 6-3 on Tuesday night at the
Rogers Cup in Toronto.
The World No. 3, who notched his first ATP World Tour Masters
1000 win in 2000 at Miami, improved to a 210-65 lifetime record
at the ATP’s premier level of tournaments. American Andre Agassi,
the previous record holder, compiled a 209-73 mark from
1990-2006.
Federer returned to competition for the first time in more than
a month, and was made to work hard in his second-round opener.
Chela double faulted to give Federer a break in the sixth game,
but prevented the Swiss from serving out the set as he converted
on a triple break point opportunity to get back on serve at 5-4.
Federer finally sealed the set after putting away his fifth set
point of the tie-break.
The second set proved more straightfoward for the third-seeeded
Swiss. Federer broke Chela to go up 3-2 and closed out the match
in one hour and 21 minutes with another break of serve.
"I thought it was a good match overall," he said. "It's always
nice to come back after six weeks and get the win. I think
that's really what counts the most tonight. It's normal that
you're a bit rusty after six weeks. You have to work your way
into playing matches again, even though you play a lot of
practice sets and matches."
Federer is looking to win his 17 ATP World Tour Masters 1000
title, and his first since last August at the Western & Southern
Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati. He won his two Rogers Cup
titles in 2004 and ’06 in Toronto.
This is Federer’s first tournament appearance as the world’s No.
3 player since the 2003 Tennis Masters Cup in Houston, where he
ended up winning the title with victory over Andre Agassi in the
final.
"Rankings are what they are," said Federer. "You can't control
them that much unless you win tournaments. That's not what I
have been doing lately, so I know I have to try to do better
there. Other guys played well, as well. So they deserve the
ranking that everybody has. Rankings usually don't lie, so it's
up to me to make a move now."
The Swiss, who celebrated his 29th birthday Sunday, will next
face the winner of the Nicolas Almagro-Michael Llodra match.
I've been looking to add someone to my team and I've decided to spend some
days with Paul Annacone. As Paul winds down his responsibilities working for
the Lawn Tennis Association, we will explore our relationship through this
test period. Paul will work alongside my existing team and I am excited to
learn from his experiences.
See you soon
Roger"

Hi everyone!
It has been some time. I know you
are all probably like: What is going on?! But
don't worry, the site is not dead, although it looked like that for the past
month :P.
I am just very busy right now. And it will be like that
at least until the beginning of September. I won't say I won't update
the site until then, but there will be less updates then normal. This is
just too important right now.
I know the pictures are down again.. It irritates me too.
It is a poor host, but the reason I use it is because it is supposed to earn
me some money for views. Even though I have never recieved anything.. But
because I don't get any donations, I have used that site. And the earnings
from the advertisements on the site are also not that good. So that's why I
have used it.
But don't worry, this site won't go away just yet! Just
come back and check regularly to see if there are updates.
Greetings, RFP!

Unfortunately Federer was not able to beat Swede Robin
Sodelring this time. Soderling proved to be too strong and beat Federer 3-6
6-3 7-5 6-4.
Federer is through to the last 8 after beating Stanislas Wawrinka; 6-3
7-6(5) 6-2.
Federer got the early break against Wawrinka and did not get in much
trouble after that. He went on to hold his servicegames and served out the
set, 6-3.
The second set was a much tougher one. Federer got broken immediately and
Wawrinka upped his game. He kept holding his servicegames and Federer had to
work. But Federer managed to get the break back. They both then held serve
to take the set to a tiebreak. Wawrinka took early leads in that tiebreak
but Federer kept coming back. At 5-5 Wawrinka missed an easy volley and
Federer had setpoint. He did not let that present get away and took the set
in the tibreak.
After that Federer cruised to victory with 2 more breaks of serve.
Federer is now in his 24th consecutive QF in a Grand Slam. He will now
play last years final opponent, Robin Soderling. Couple of facts of that
match: If Federer wins he keeps his consecutive Grand Slam semi final streak
alive. He will secure 286 weeks at number one, equaling Pete Sampras and
Federer can get his 200th Grand Slam victory. So again history can be made
with this match. Good luck!
Federer has also won his 3rd match at Roland Garros. Federer beat Reister:
6-4 6-0 6-4.
I could not see the match so i don't know exatcly how it went.
Appearantly Reister could keep up with Federer until 4-4 first set. After
that, looking at the scoreline, it was all Federer. He bageled his opponent
in the second set.
In the third set Federer only needed one break to seal the deal. He has
yet to drop his serve this tournament.
Federer will now play on sunday against either Wawrinka or Fognini.
Federer has also won his second
match at Roland Garros. After a tough first set Federer shifted to another
gear and had no more problems with Falla,
7-6(4) 6-2 6-4.
The first set was a tough one. Conditions were very
different then his last match. It was a bit wet and there was a lot of wind.
The court was very slow and Federer could not find his game. He made many
unforced errors in this first set. He could make no impact on tha Falla
serve who held to love for most of the time.
At 5-5 Falla even managed to break Federer and he
served for the set. Federer up until then did not have a single breakpoint.
But as the champion that he is, when he needed it most, he produced. He
broke Falla back and things would be decided in the tiebreak.
Federer proved to be too strong in that one and won
the first set.
After that, Federer played a lot better. He looked
like his old self again and played great tennis. Falla didn't stand a chance
in the second and third set and Federer raced to victory. The only thing
that lengthened the match were the rain delays. As said, the weather was not
optimal today. But thankfully Federer got through his match and is safely
into the third round.
Federer has started this years Roland Garros in fine
fashion. He played a very good match to beat Australian Luczak, 6-4 6-1 6-2.
Federer looked great and produced some brilliant shots.
Especially the dropshot was a lust for the eye.
Luczak could never really trouble Federer and got broken
several times. In the first set Luczak could keep up with Federer until
5-4*. Then he got broken and never got a chance afterwards.
So Federer got off to a good start in Paris. He will
play Falla of Colombia next.
But we are already moving on from that
day. Federer is in Paris and preparing for the French Open. He is practicing
and later today he is playing an exhibition match against Rainer Schuettler.
Here are some pictures of him training
and 2 video's. He met up with Djokovic and Ivanovic yesterday as you can see
in the pictures:

Federer avenged his defeat against Gulbis in Rome. He this time beat him
in Madrid: 3-6 6-1 6-4.
It did not start as well as it could. Federer was not looking sharp and
again immediately got broken. Gulbis was playing some good tennis and
Federer just did not get into the Gulbis service games. He was also making a
bit too many unforced errors. Gulbis managed to keep his early advantage and
served out the first set: 3-6.
Federer, who had been holding convincingly after he first got broken,
knew he had to start good in the second set. In a way he did, but not after
he got broken again in his first service game. But after that he won 3 games
in a row and had the avantage again. Federer really played a lot better at
this point and looked like his good old self again. He broke Gulbis again
and the second set was a breadstick: 6-1.
In the third Federer continued to play good tennis and after holding off
Gulbis in his first servicegame, he managed to break Gulbis early again with
some incredible tennis; 3-1 Federer. All he had to do now is hold on to his
own serve. And he did. He closed out the match and booked his spot in the
semi final.
A great win over an in-form player. He again played an excellent match.
It looks like Federer is warming up nicely for the French Open which starts
in a little over a week.

Federer also won his second match in Madrid very convincingly. He again
produced a great performance in beating fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka: 6-3
6-1.
The match didn't start as well as he continued it. He got broken
immediately and it looked to be a tough night again. But Federer broke back
right after and was unstoppable after that.
He broke Wawrinka to take a 3-1 lead and never gave it back. Without any
problem and with solid tennis Federer took the opening set six games to
three.
He continued to dominate in the second set. After breaking Wawrinka twice
he took a 4-0 lead. Stan managed to hold one more time but when he had to
serve to stay in the match he got broken again. 6-1.
All in all it is looking like the Federer we know again. I never had any
doubts because I know how many times he has proven the criticasters wrong.
And even though it could go wrong again today against Gulbis, in a best of 5
match it is going to be very hard to beat him at Roland Garros.
As said, Federer will play Gulbis today. not before 20.00 Madrid time.

Federer has won his first match in Madrid, where he is trying to defend
his title, with a convincing 6-3 7-6(5) victory over Benjamin Becker.
Unlike Federer's last few matches, where he was making errors all over
the place, Federer was playing good tennis. His performance was that of an
normal first match at an tournament. Balls that were flying well out in
Estoril now went in. It looked pretty good.
Federer broke Becker 1 time in the first set to take it 6-3. In the
second set Federer came close to finishing the match earlier, but Becker
managed to get to a tiebreak. Federer proved to be the stronger player in
that one.
Federer will now play good friend Stanislas Wawrinka on thursday.

Federer has won his first clay match of the season. In
Estoril he beat Bjorn Phau, 6-3 6-4.
After
losing his first clay match of the season to Ernest Gulbis, Federer needs
all the match play he can get in Estoril. He started in the right way. It
was still far from pretty, but a win is a win. Match play is what he needs.
Federer needed only 84 minutes to win the match. He
saved all three breakpoints he got against him.
Phau was a player who did not have a negative head to
head against Federer. It was 1-1. Federer has now gained the upperhand in
yet another H2H.
Federer will now play against Arnaud Clement of
France on friday.
Federer has already lost in this year´s Rome Masters. He
was beaten by Gulbis: 2-6 6-1 7-5.
As most of his losses, in the first set there was no problem. He
was playing good, hitting the forehand well, the backhand well,
and serving well. But like so many matches in the second set he
just faded drastically.
He was producing error after error and gave Gulbis
the opportunity to believe in himself. Even after he had no right doing that
after that first set.
Federer got broken a couple of times and lost that
second set 6-1.
You would hope for a recovery in the third, but that
did not happen. He again went down a break early. Federer continued to play
sloppy and looked nothing like the player that won the Australian Open very
convincingly.
He had to fight of a couple of matchs points at 5-3*,
Federer serving. He managed to do so and Gulbis had to serve it out. As
known, Gulbis is quite a choker so Federer would probably get his chances.
And he did. After saving (or Gulbis squandering) a couple of match points,
Federer got a break point and took it: 5-5.
But a terrible game from Federer after that gave
Gulbis another break. This time he did not fail. GSM Gulbis.
Federer is still playing doubles here with Yves
Allegro. So he is still in the tournament. But not in the way we want of
course.
Federer's next singles tournament is in Estoril.
Let's hope he can at least win a couple of rounds there. He needs the match
practice. He has only played 6 matches in the last 3 months. That is not
enough.
Federer had a press conference yesterday
in Rome. Here are some pictures of that event:

As you all know by now, Federer lost his
match against Berdych. Just like against Baghdatis Federer lost in the 3rd
set tiebreak.
This is what Federer himself had to say
after his defeat:
"It's no secret
that I struggled the last five matches I played in the States," Roger said.
"I fought, and tried everything I could, but my game is lacking something
right now. I'm lacking timing. I had so many chances, but I never felt great
all night. When I don't play my best, it's hard to judge my opponent, but I
knew the danger. This only fuels my desire to go to the practice courts and
figure out what's wrong, and get better."
But the good news is Federer is already
practicing again. And he is on clay again for the first time this year. Here
is a picture from his facebook:
I still owe you guys some pictures from
Federer in Miami. So here they are:

Federer is through to the 4th round
after beating Florent Serra of French, 7-6(2) 7-6(3).
This match could and should have been a
lot easier then it turned out to be. In both sets Federer had a lead but was
unable to keep it.
In the first set Federer started good.
At 3-2* Federer broke his opponent and took a nice lead. He consolidated the
break by winning his next service game. But when he needed to serve out the
set a couple of bad shots and some nice winners from Serra spoiled the
party. He was broken back. Things then went to a tiebreak. In this tiebreak
Federer was clearly the better player and only gave Serra 2 points.
The second set also looked to be going
very good for Federer. He even lead by a double break. Normally that is more
then enough for someone like Federer to take the set and thereby the match.
But not yesterday. Again Federer let Serra come back and pose a threat. The
good thing is in the tie-break Federer again changed a gear and was much
better then Serra. This time only giving him 3 points.
All in all it must be said this was
another pretty sloppy match from Federer. His ball striking again failed him
on quite some occasions, making many unforced errors. But it must also be
said that Federer made like 5 absolutely BRILLIANT points this match.
Therefore it was still a very nice match to look at. Look at the highlights
beneith to see some points.
Federer has started his journey for a 3rd Miami title well.
He defeated Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador in straight sets, 6-3 6-3.
Even though the match was pretty easy
and a nice warm up for the rest of his matches, Federer did not really play
that well. Especially the forehand produced great shots, followed by a
couple more very bad shots. Federer himself said that the ball was floating
a bit and that's why he mistimed a lot of shots.
Federer's backhand and serve were very
good none the less. Both firing on al cilinders. Also his breakpoint
conversion of 100% was pretty good to say the least.
Federer did had to fight of a couple of
breakpoints in the beginning of the match but never really had much trouble
after that. He broke the Ecuadorian once in the first set and eased to a one
set lead.
The second set Federer started to play
a bit better. Especially near the end. The last couple of games looked like
Federer found his rhythm. He broke Lapentti twice. The second one was to
take the match.
With Murray and Djokovic already out,
Federer has a great shot of grabbing the record of most weeks at number one.
But some more points, preferably 1000, would help in a big way.
Federer will now play against Florent
Serra.
By the way, AWESOME outfit. One of the
best in the last few years.

Unfortunately Roger's campaign at the
2010 Indian Wells Masters 1000 tournament came to a quick end after Marcos
Barghdatis beat Federer in 3 sets: 5-7 7-5 7-6(4).
After beating Hanescu in 3 sets Federer
could not do the same to Baghdatis. Even though it should have been a much
easier match against the Cypriot. He should have beaten him in 2.
After taking the first set with a
single break at the end of the set Federer also had opportunities to take
the second set as well. At 5-4* Baghdatis serving Federer had 2 matchpoints
but he was careless on both and fired long. After these mistakes Baghdatis
broke Federer and took the second set himself.
In the 3rd Federer took a 4-1 lead, but
again let the Cypriot come back. In the deciding tiebreak Baghdatis proved
to be the stronger one and took it, and therefore the match. It was
Federer's first loss to Baghdatis in 7 meetings.
Federer was playing pretty bad and made
way too many unforced errors.
But let's not forget he has come off a
long break. This was his first match since winning the Australian Open many
weeks ago. He has also gotten a lung infection in the mean time. So he could
not prepare optimal. Let's hope this early exit gives Federer time to get
ready for Miami wich starts next week.

and Baghdatis:
